Knitted Scrunchie - Free Pattern

A knitted scrunchie is the perfect small project for in-between – quick to knit, individual, and ideal for small yarn scraps.

Depending on the yarn, it can look simple and modern or soft and playful, and can be wonderfully matching to your wardrobe. A small accessory that effortlessly complements everyday looks – and brings just as much joy in knitting as in wearing.

  YOU WILL NEED
  • some yarn - for the scrunchie shown, I used yarn with approx. 390 m per 100g.
  • a hair elastic, small or large (2 or 4 cm diameter)
  • a 3.5 mm circular needle with a 100 cm cable
  • a short cable with a 3 mm needle and stoppers
  • a tapestry needle
BASIC PATTERN

stockinette stitch - knit all stitches

INSTRUCTIONS

  Provisional cast-on by looping:

Place a loop on the small needle
and hold both needle tips parallel
to each other.
Cast on 80 stitches with the working
yarn.
This stitch count works well if you
are using the smaller hair tie.
For the larger one, go for a stitch
count of 100 - 110 stitches.

This is what it looks like now.

Carefully pull the smaller needle out to the front so that the stitch loops are on the short cable and you can continue with the working needle.

Begin to knit.
First, knit one row.

After half the stitches, pull the long cable of the (larger) working needle out to the back and lay the two working needles parallel.
Now pull the front needle out to knit, join the stitches in the round and begin to knit stockinette stitch in the round.

Now continue knitting stockinette stitch in the round until the knitted piece measures approx. 10 cm.
Then take the hair elastic.

Turn the knitted tube inside out and pull the hair elastic over it.

Now both stitch edges are joined with the Kitchener stitch.
To do this, place both needle tips (the smaller from the provisional cast-on and the working needle) parallel to each other (the wrong side of the fabric is inside!) and join the open stitches with the Kitchener stitch (explained step-by-step below).

JOINING THE OPEN EDGES WITH KITCHENER STITCH

Before you begin, check that the stitches are aligned. Hold the needles parallel to each other, so that both needle tips point to the right and the wrong sides of the fabric are facing each other.

PREPARATION

Cut the working yarn, leaving a tail about 3 - 4 times as long as the edge to be bound off. Thread the yarn into a tapestry needle.
1. Insert the tapestry needle into the first stitch on the front needle as if to purl.
Leave the stitch on the needle.
2. Insert the yarn into the first stitch on the back needle as if to knit
and leave the stitch on the needle.

Now repeat the following four steps continuously:

Front – knit, slip: Insert the needle into the first stitch on the front
needle as if to knit and let the stitch slip off the needle.

Front – purl, leave on needle: Insert the yarn into the
next stitch on the front needle as if to purl and leave the stitch on the needle.

Back – purl, slip: Insert the yarn into the first stitch on the
back needle as if to purl and let the stitch slip off the needle.

Back – knit, leave on needle: Insert the yarn into the
next stitch on the back needle as if to knit and leave it on the needle.

FINISHING

Once there is only one stitch left on each needle
Insert the yarn into the stitch on the front needle as if to knit and
let it slip off the needle.
Insert the yarn into the stitch on the back needle as if to purl and
let this stitch also slip off the needle.
Gently pull the yarn tight so that it has the same tension as the other stitches, and weave in the yarn end.

Enjoy your knitting time!
