Design: A Bit Chilly in Copenhagen

On my last trip to Copenhagen, the weather was beautiful – summery, sunny, warm… but also with a cool breeze and almost stormy. The perfect opportunity for me to quickly start a new project – a small, quick-knit shawl!

CHART PATTERN BAND

DIRECTIONS
CO 3 sts using the long tail cast-on method using 3mm / US 2,5 needles. Work 6 rows in Garter Stitch (k all sts on both RS and WS). Rotate your work 90 degrees to the right and pick up 3 sts from left side edge.
Rotate your work again 90 degrees to the right and pick up 3 sts from the CO edge.
You have 9 sts on your needle.
R 1 / Set up row (WS): K 3, pm, k 3, pm, k 3 - 9 sts.
R 2 (RS): K 3, sm, M1R, k to m, M1L, sm, k 3 - 11 sts.
R 3 (WS): K 3, sm, M1R, k to m, M1L, sm, k 3 - 13 sts.
Begin with R 1 of front CENTRE PATTERN BAND
R 4 (RS): K 3, sm, M1R, k1, pm, work 5 sts of PATTERN BAND (k1tbl, yo, s2k1psso, yo, k1tbl - see
chart), pm, k 1, M1L, sm, k 3 - 15 sts.
R 5 (WS): K 3, sm, M1R, k to m, sm, work 5 sts of PATTERN BAND (p1tbl, k 3, p1tbl - see chart), sm, k to m, M1L, sm, k 3 - 17 sts.
R 6 (RS): K 3, sm, M1R, k to m, sm, work 5 sts of PATTERN BAND (k1tbl, k 3, k1tbl - see chart), sm, k to m, M1L, sm, k 3 - 19 sts.
R 7 (WS): K 3, sm, M1R, k to m, sm, work 5 sts of PATTERN BAND (p1tbl, p 3, p1tbl - see chart), sm, k to m, M1L, sm, k 3 - 21 sts.
Continue repeating rows 4 - 7. The pattern band in the centre keeps its width while the Garter Pattern at the sides is increased by 2 sts each row.
Knit 126 rows until you have 265 sts on your needle. The number of rows / stitches may vary depending on how tightly or loosely you knit. Make sure to have enough yarn remaining to bind off.
Then bind off loosely.

FINISHING
Weave in loose ends with a darning needle.
Bathe your Bandana in lukewarm water for at least 15 minutes so the fibers can relax and possible imperfections are balanced.
Being very gentle, press the excessive water out of the scarf. Be careful not to wring it! Roll the knitted piece into a towel and squeeze the moisture into the towel.
Put the scarf flat onto an underlay (ideally are blocking mats), pulling it into shape carefully. With stretching wires and combs it is very easy to block the scarf’s sides into straight edges. Fix the scarf’s edges (or the stretching wires, if you are using them) with pins or combs in the blocking mats.
Let dry flat.
And then off to Copenhagen, get on your way…! ;)
